In this study, a novel wireless-wired hybrid central pattern generator (CPG) is presented based on the concept of ergodic sequential logic. Detailed analyses reveal that the CPG is able to generate stimulation signals suitable for supporting typical human motion. The CPG is implemented using field programmable gate arrays connected via on-off keying radio transmitters and receivers. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented CPG can effectively assist human motion. Moreover, the presented CPG is demonstrated to use fewer circuit components and to have lower power consumption compared to a commonly-used conventional digital-processor-based CPG. The potential impact of this study is also discussed. © 2013 IEEE.
