Due to the dynamic and complex environment in which tourism firms operate, it can be challenging to align the pace of human resource change with corporate strategic development. In this study, we introduce strategic rhythm theory to explore the antecedents of strategic human resource management from a temporal perspective. We construct an innovative theoretical framework categorising strategic rhythms into market and non-market types to elucidate how these rhythms influence the evolutionary process of strategic human resource management within tourism firms. Based on a longitudinal case study, our findings indicate that aligning strategic development with human resource change is a non-linear, sequential, and dynamic process. Both non-market and market strategic rhythms exhibit an entrainment mechanism, achieving an intermittent fit between strategic development and human resource change through optimisation and complementary functions. Furthermore, this study deconstructs the process by which strategic rhythm drives strategic human resources, summarising three action logics: strategic follow-up, strategic leadership, and strategic lag. It also identifies the states of rhythmic systems into three stages: arrhythmia, polyrhythmic coordination, and eurhythmia. This study extends the scope of strategic human resource management by showing how tourism firms can achieve strategic fit, offering practical value to help them leverage strengths to thrive.

The shift to a vegetarian diet has multiple benefits, including the promotion of public health, sustainability, and animal welfare. Despite these advantages, vegetarian food choices often provoke controversy, particularly on social media platforms. On International Vegetarian Day 2021, renowned Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu endorsed a documentary titled "Vegetarian" on Weibo, igniting widespread discussion among Chinese netizens. Considering China's deep cultural and practical roots in vegetarianism, the predominantly negative response to the documentary was surprising. This study employs frame analysis to dissect the portrayal of vegetarianism in the documentary, utilizing topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation and sentiment analysis to examine over 26,000 related comments. Our findings indicate that the documentary predominantly utilizes health and ethical frames to represent vegetarianism, with a greater emphasis on ethical considerations. Topic modeling of the comments uncovered 14 topics that reflect netizens' dissatisfaction with various facets of the vegetarian advocacy presented in the documentary. Moreover, the comments reveal three primary strategies netizens use to justify meat consumption and alleviate cognitive dissonance: rationalization of meat eating, skepticism towards vegetarianism, and resistance to the advocacy message of "Vegetarian". The results imply that for vegetarian advocacy to be more effective, it should align with local everyday concerns, food culture, and the current stage of social development.

With the blurring of boundaries between tourism and everyday life, research has increasingly focused on tourism activities occurring within daily life spaces. This paper explores various encounters in proximity tourism through a wet market study tour. It investigates how the mundane practice of 'roaming through a wet market' has evolved into tourism encounters that resonate with everyday life experiences. It found that firstly, the wet market, which is typically associated with everyday life, appears unfamiliar and alienating to young parents and children. This unfamiliarity serves as a prerequisite for its transformation from a commonplace activity to a tourist attraction. Secondly, tourism encounters can be created. Organizers intentionally create encounters through interactive activities, fostering difference-based interactions. Thirdly, the proximity tourism encounter can be understood as a process of (re)discovering the everyday and the nearby. Its impacts extend beyond the tourism space, influencing attitudes, practices, and reflections on self, family relationships, and the local environment. The study highlights the group dimension of encounters in family tourism and suggests a shift in encounter studies to focus on relational aspects. It calls for recognizing the interconnected relationship between tourism and everyday life.

In the West, the local food movement began with the hope of constructing sustainable food systems, but the philosophy's actual impact must be examined in specific sociocultural contexts. Focusing on the daily food practices of consumers in Guangzhou, China, this study explores how Chinese consumers define, understand, and experience local food, the characteristics of local food initiatives in China, and their multifaced impacts on social sustainability. The results show that Guangzhou consumers actively seek out local food and even become involved in the production, a highly effective strategy for addressing food quality challenges. Consumer perspectives on local food can be grouped into three categories: placed-based native food, culture-based hometown food, and value-based ecological food, with localness conferred by the pathways of visceral experience, cultural heritage, and value identity. The study argues that, theoretically, the definition of local food should transcend geographical boundaries and incorporate relational proximities among consumer bodies, places, cultures, and producers as robust parameters. Practically, consumer-led local food initiatives promote social sustainability at different levels by alleviating people's diverse food anxieties and connecting various communities. They also demonstrate the possibility of solidifying the urban-rural nexus, but efforts to motivate broad public participation and institutional support are needed.

Alternative food networks (AFNs) have been viewed as being more deeply embedded in the fabric of places and the social relations of their food systems than conventional food networks, and have been regarded as `spaces of hope' for addressing sustainability challenges associated with global food systems. This paper argues that embeddedness, however, is contingent and shifting rather than an intrinsic quality, and is shaped by the cultures of production, trade, and consumption in particular places. This paper evaluates challenges that emerging AFNs in Guangzhou, China, are confronting relating to their embeddedness in place. The paper is underpinned by research involving interviews and focus groups with key food system actors and stakeholders in Guangzhou, including government officials, organic farmers, retailers, and non-governmental organizations. It demonstrates that AFNs in Guangzhou achieve only `fragmentary embeddedness' in local cultures and systems of production, retail, and consumption. Despite strong social relationships established by a few successful farms and their loyal consumer groups, AFNs more broadly have struggled to embed themselves in the social and cultural fabric of the city and its commercial foodscapes. In terms of territorial embeddedness, the association of AFNs with western values, which do not always translate into Guangzhou's production and retail systems, can limit their embeddedness and scaling up in this context. The split between `new' farmers (i.e., educated and urban-rooted producers `returning to the land') and common farmers (i.e., local peasants) further exacerbates the difficulty of integrating AFNs in rural communities. Regarding social embeddedness, AFNs struggle to meet local consumer preferences regarding food appearances, quality, and taste, and therefore consumer trust in them is limited. In terms of institutional embeddedness, AFNs lack government policy support, despite the alignment of their missions with national strategies. More efforts are needed to deepen the embeddedness of AFNs in Guangzhou's food system and cultures if they are to respond effectively to China's food crisis and wider sustainability issues.

This paper examines the interaction effects of social support (supervisor support and coworker support) and AI surveillance on employee job engagement drawing on the social exchange theory. Mixed research methods were applied. Researchers collected 358 valid time-lagged designed questionnaires and tested the model using a path analysis approach. The results revealed that there is a moderated mediation mechanism in relationships between supervisor support/coworker support and job engagement, in which both self-efficacy and self-esteem are mediating variables and AI surveillance plays a moderating role. Specifically, when the degree of job control with AI surveillance is at a low level, the effect of supervisor support/coworker support on employees' self-efficacy/self-esteem is stronger. The indirect relationship between supervisor support/coworker support and job engagement through self-esteem is moderated by job control with AI surveillance as well, and the indirect relationship becomes stronger when job control with AI surveillance is lower. Findings from a series of semi-structured post-hoc interviews with 18 hotel employees interpretatively support the survey results. This research fills this gap by analyzing relationships among social support, AI surveillance, and job engagement and provides positive suggestions for hotel operation and employee management with AI surveillance during pandemic.
